From Cavities to Credit Scores: How Small Habits Shape Big Outcomes

by Phil Tull | November 24, 2025 | Financial Planning

A few months ago, I received not one – but two – compliments on my teeth and smile. And yes, I’m counting! Why? Because for most of my life, I dreaded going to the dentist. I was the kid with countless cavities and frequent fillings. Some dentists even told me I was just genetically prone to cavities. That never felt helpful, and I remember thinking, “Ok, but what do I do with that?”

Eventually, I realized that while I couldn’t change my genes, I could change my habits. Over the past decade, I’ve made small but meaningful shifts to achieve better dental hygiene. Not just responsive things like brushing, flossing, and rinsing more, but also upstream things like cutting out sugary drinks and candy and rinsing with water after eating sweets. It wasn’t overnight, and it definitely wasn’t perfect. But now in my thirties, I smile with pride and don’t dread the dentist nearly as much. (Well, maybe still just a little.)

The Connection Between Everyday Choices and Long-Term Financial Health

That journey got me thinking: do dentists feel the same frustration watching candy and coffee commercials as I do watching ads for DoorDash and credit cards?

As a financial planner, I often wish I could tap into the “ignorance is bliss” mindset and unsee some of the things I’ve seen. Like:

  • Turning a $7 coffee into a $12 coffee thanks to delivery fees.
  • Financing a wedding – and still making payments two years later.
  • Financing vacations, remodels, boats… you name it.
  • Financing a Christmas tree through Lowe’s Pay. (Yes, really.)

Lowe’s Pay

These aren’t just purchases. They’re decisions that shape your financial future. Your spending power is deteriorating, and you are being encouraged to do it. Payment plan companies like Klara and Afterpay aren’t offering “easy monthly payments” out of kindness. Car companies don’t have internal financing departments and push lease options for your convenience. They are profiting off of our lack of financial literacy and our tendency to normalize luxury as necessity.

So, here’s a little trick I use when I’m tempted – or when a salesperson gets pushy: I ask, “Why?” Like a toddler who keeps asking “why” until you’re explaining the creation of earth. It’s surprisingly effective.

Just like I worked toward those, “Nice teeth!” compliments, imagine hearing, “Nice finances!” someday. It’s possible. It starts with ownership and small, consistent choices.

Here’s an analogy I love: if you sit and stare at a tree, you won’t see it grow. But come back in five years, and the change is undeniable. That’s how financial growth works, too.

Money Choices: Against You vs. For You

Let’s talk about some financial decisions that can either work for you or against you. Small cuts, like packing a lunch rather than eating out, are helpful, but let’s cover a few heavy hitters that can make a sizable dent in your personal finances.

Money Choices Against You vs. For You

Sure, current-you might say, “It’s my dream car!” or “It’s my wedding day that I will remember forever!” But future-you might not agree – and might disagree big time!

Four Critical Tips for Financial Wellness

  • Ask “Why?” Often.

Pre-decide your budget before you shop and practice delayed gratification – even if it’s simply to train your brain that it’s okay to wait. You may decide tomorrow you don’t really need it.

  • Don’t Fall for the Ignorance is Bliss Trap.

You have the power to create the life you want. Don’t give that power away by avoiding financial decisions or letting others make them for you.

  • Don’t Spend What You Don’t Have.

Choose to save now for what you may need or want in the future. Let your money work for you – not for someone else’s bottom line.

  • Celebrate Your Wins.

Maybe your teeth are shining bright – and maybe your finances are, too. If this message resonates, please share it with someone in your life who could benefit.
